QUICK DAY – MINOR MODIFICATIONS TO GMU 22 MOUNTING BRACKET

I did not have much time in the hangar today, so it was a perfect day for a minor project. I have elected to use the GMU 22 as a part of my avionics suite, which will require the GMU 22 mounting bracket. No, my plane will not go fast enough to require this, but again, I have opted for it anyways. Just another reason I love experimental aircraft. Moving on. I purchased my bracket from Stein – and have linked to the page here. I really like the look of this bracket and it felt really strong once I inspected it. Overall it will do the trick nicely. The mounting location is on the forward most tailcone arch prior to the otherwise unattached skin at this point (see image below).

It doesn’t come with any rivets or a drill guide, all of this is left to the builder to determine. This could not be less of a deal. In order to get it to sit flush, there are a few options. You can drill out the current rivets and make them a part of the bracket attachment. HARD PASS. Instead, I create a groove with my bandsaw that made a channel for those rivets (sorry no picture). Then I used cleco clamps and a level to ensure it was aligned correctly and match-drilled some rivet holes. In the end, this GMU 22 mounting bracket from Stein really fit the bill. Now, to buy the GMU 22…
